ADVOCACY EXPERIENCE

MEDICI

PROJECT

In March 2016, I co-led an alternative spring break to Atlanta, GA with a social focus in human trafficking. This video documents the personal experience of my group, as well as the different service opportunities we had while in Atlanta.

JMU

END IT

MOVEMENT

This is an advocacy campaign that I created for a social welfare course. Human trafficking is a pertinent subject, and few college students know of its prevelence in our community. For this reason, I chose to create a website that included college students into the bigger picture of the issue. In order to do this, I referenced the End It Movement, and I encouraged students to learn about human trafficking.

This websitwe was shared and publically supported by the Shenandoah Valley Justice Initiative.

VOLUNTOURISM

VS.

VOLUNTEERISM

I wrote this piece to discuss the difference between voluntourism and volunteerism. It is critical to highlight the differnece between the two when engaging in volunteer activity--particularily in third world countires. This piece argues that while the idea of volunteering can be a good thing, there is a potential to cause harm within a vulnerable community when volunteers are not properly educated.

I reference the Community Servive Learning Program at JMU as an example of effective volunteering throughout the article.
